http://crafts.kaboose.com/swf/350x250birdfeeder5_rdax_65.jpg

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

Recycle a milk carton and make new feathered friends with this creative nature Earth Day craft. Also make a great spring craft.

What you’ll need:

  • Empty quart sized cardboard milk carton
  • Scissors
  • String or cord
  • Hole punch or pencil
  • Bird seed

How to make it:

  1. Have an adult help you cut a hole in the bird feeder – it should be big enough so a bird could come and sit and eat the feed, but not too big or the carton will become unstable. (Picture #1)
  2. Have an adult help you cut a hole using the hole punch in the top of the milk carton and put a string through the hole. Alternatively, you can poke a hole on either side of the flap at the top of the carton by poking a pencil through the top. (Picture #2)
  3. Tie a knot in the string. (Picture #3)
  4. Fill the carton with bird seed until it reaches the top of the hole. (Picture #4)
  5. Hang the cart on a tree branch and watch the birds enjoy their snack! (Picture #5)

Tips:

  • A quart size carton works perfect as it isn’t too large and holds a decent amount of food.
  • You may choose to decorate the outside of the carton but keep in mind that it will be outside in the elements and decorations may wash off in the rain. Also, you wouldn’t want the birds pecking at flaking paint!
  • Check your bird feeder regularly and refill as needed.

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

You will have fun making your own watering can to use in the garden by recycling a plastic jug! With a little help from an adult, you can make this easy watering can as an Earth Day craft.

What you’ll need:

  • ½ gallon plastic milk or juice jug with handle and lid
  • Small finishing nail or screw
  • Hammer
  • Stickers

How to make it:

  1. Thoroughly wash out a plastic milk or juice jug. (Picture #1)
  2. Go through a supply of stickers to choose what they would like to use to decorate your water jug.
  3. A grown up should use the tip of a finishing nail or screw and a hammer to gently poke holes in the lid of the jug. (Picture #2)
  4. Then decorate the jug with your choice of stickers. Other options to decorate include gluing on yarn or painting the jug. Keep in mind that the decorations may not last, but the functionality of the watering can will! (Picture #3)
  5. Fill jug with water and put lid back on. (Picture #4)
  6. Show younger siblings how to hold the jug with the handle and tip it to rain on the flowers! (Picture #5)

Tips:

  • If the decorations wear off, don’t fret–just redecorate the jug with new accessories.
  • Add some plant food (according to box directions) to the water jug.
  • Keep water jug on a low shelf near the garden so your helpers (younger siblings) can reach it easily.

Laundry Bottle Pet Food Scoop!

http://crafts.kaboose.com/swf/craft_laundry2_rdax_65.jpg

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

Even your pets can go green for Earth Day! Recycle an empty laundry bottle into a use scooper for your pet’s food.

What you’ll need:

  • Plastic laundry bottle
  • Felt in your favorite shades
  • White craft glue
  • Scissors or a sharp knife
  • Felt alphabet stickers (optional)

How to make it:

  1. Have a grown up cut the top of the laundry bottle off, leaving the handle in tact.
  2. Remove packaging labels and wash the outside to remove any residue.
  3. Wash the inside thoroughly, making sure that all soap residue has been removed. A good rinse with very hot water will ensure all soap is gone.
  4. If using felt alphabet stickers, stick them to the front of the bottle, spelling out your pet’s name. If you don’t have the felt stickers, simply cut your pet’s name out of felt and glue them to the bottle.
  5. Cut out fun shapes such as bones, biscuits, and paw prints, and glue them all over the bottle.
  6. Let dry completely before using.

Tips:

  • Save plastic bottles, cans, paper towel rolls, cereal boxes and other recyclable materials to make fun craft projects.
  • Use your imagination to develop more craft projects from what might otherwise be garbage.
