“My Mom’s The Best” Keychain!

http://crafts.kaboose.com/swf/350_keychain_03_FINAL_rdax_65.jpg

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

This pretty keychain will tell mom just how much you love her! With pretty colored beads and a personal message, your mom will cherish this gift.

What you’ll need:

  • Alphabet beads to spell “MY MOMS THE BEST”
  • Colorful beads to fill in gaps (approximately 30-40)
  • Colorful charm
  • Keychain ring
  • 24″ stretchy jewelry cord, cut into two equal pieces

How to make it:

  1. Line up the two pieces of jewelry cord side by side, then gather one end together and tie in a triple knot to the keychain ring.
  2. Thread 4-5 colorful beads onto one side of the jewelry cord.
  3. Thread on the letters T H and E, be sure they are facing the correct direction.
  4. Follow with 4-5 more colorful beads.
  5. Add the letters B, E, S and T.
  6. Add 4-5 more beads.
  7. Carefully set the finished cord aside, taping the end of the cord to the table will keep the beads from falling off.
  8. On the other string, add 3-4 colorful beads, then the letters M and Y.
  9. Next add 3-4 more colorful beads, and then the letters M, O, M and S. (Picture #1)
  10. Add 5-6 more colorful beads.
  11. Lay the two strings along side each other and add beads to the shortest side to get them even.
  12. Holding the two ends of the jewelry cord as close to the last beads as possible, thread one last colorful bead onto BOTH strings. Run the string through the bead again by looping it through the top and pulling it tight. (Picture #2)
  13. Tie the charm to the end of the string, knot it several times and trim ends. Don’t trim it too close!

Tips:

  • For younger siblings you can use pony beads and larger alphabet beads as well as hemp or thicker jewelry cord.
  • If you like, instead of the phrase, make up your own phrase or use your mom’s first name.
  • This keychain also makes a lovely addition to mom’s work desk hanging on a pushpin!

Fabric Scrap Flower Garden!

http://crafts.kaboose.com/swf/fabric-scrap-flower-garden-craft-photo-350-aformaro-205_rdax_65.jpg

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

Using craft sticks and fabric scraps, you can create this fun and pretty flower garden activity with recycled materials – perfect for Earth Day & Mother’s Day.

What you’ll need:

  • Fabric scraps in bright colors
  • Scissors
  • 7 craft sticks
  • White craft glue
  • 2 green skinny chenille stems
  • White craft paint
  • 1 sheet pink felt

How to make it:

Cut some simple shapes from the fabric for your flowers. They should be about 1 – 1.5 inches diameter. Cut small circles and square and glue those to the center of some of your flower shapes. (Picture #1)

Line up 5 craft sticks side by side. There should be enough space between each that one craft stick will stretch across all 5 horizontally. Glue one stick at the top and one at the bottom, about an inch from the top and bottom. Let the glue dry then paint fence white. (Picture #2)

Cut chenille into 6 different lengths. Glue the chenille stems to the fence. (Picture #3)

Glue the flowers to the tops of each chenille stem. (Picture #4)

Glue the fence to a piece of pink felt. Trim around the edge to create an even border.

Tips:

  1. This looks great hanging on your mother’s door or wall! Simply take a long fabric scrap and create a simple hanger by gluing it to the back.
  2. Save fabric scraps in a zipper gallon storage bag or plastic container with a lid for future projects such as this.
  3. To create a sturdy frame, glue the pink felt backing to a piece of poster board or card stock.
