Nick Jonas – Battle Of The Bands Winners!

Congrats to the Boys & Girls Club of St. Lucie County from Port St. Lucie, Florida — they won the grand prize of DoSomething.org’s Battle of the Bands campaign!

Launched alongside spokesperson Nick Jonas, the campaign encouraged teens to submit videos to DoSomething.org about the importance of music in their lives.

Nick, 17, was joined by other celebs including Death Cab for Cutie, Kristen Bell, and America’s Best Dance Crew champions the Jabbawockeez, to share their stories about why music education matters and encourage participation.

DoSomething.org and the VH1 Save the Music Foundation will present the ‘Battle of the Bands’ video submissions to Senators and members of Congress at events on the Hill in May and June 2010.

The Boys & Girls Club of St. Lucie County will receive a $5000 grant for their school music program and is scheduled to perform before music executives at DoSomething.org’s star-studded annual event at the Apollo Theater on May 24th. Four additional bands were also selected to receive up to $1000 for their school music programs, concert tickets, Rock Band video games, Fender guitars, and more.

Log onto DoSomething.org to check out all the videos!

Taylor Swift – I’m A Big People-Watcher!

Taylor Swift is gorgeous in sea-foam green in this new behind-the-scenes pic from her CoverGirl photo shoot.

The 20-year-old country cutie caught up with People at the shoot to dish on makeup, being a big people-watcher and possible branching into the fashion world. Check it:

On becoming a different character with makeup: “I love makeup. When I go on stage, I get to play with my look and try on all kinds of different colors — try red lips tonight, purple eyeshadow tomorrow. You get to play around with all these different characters, and I think that’s one of my favorite things about makeup — you can put on a new character. I wanted to sort of show how makeup can play up your natural features. It’s not about changing how you look. I feel like I still look like myself, and that’s exactly what I hoped for.”

On finding inspiration from her fans: I’m a big people-watcher. When I see a girl walking down the street wearing a really cool necklace or an outfit that’s put together in a way I wouldn’t have thought of, it’s inspiring to me. Also, girls come through my meet and greet lines every night wearing dresses or outfits I love. That’s really my favorite way to be inspired by fashion.”

On a possible Taylor Swift fashion line: I’m not planning on a fashion line right now. I’m really wrapped up in recording and writing my next album, so I’ve only taken on a few extra things lately. I love fashion and dressing up for red carpets, but I want to wait until I have enough time to dedicate to something like that.

Fingerprint Poem For Mom!

http://crafts.kaboose.com/swf/finger-poem2_rdax_65.jpg

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

This sweet poem combined with your fingerprint art makes for a fabulous gift and keepsake. Simple enough for even young siblings to make, Mom will love the gesture and save it forever.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 sheets of card stock, purple and light blue
  • White printer paper
  • Acrylic paint: purple, light blue, pink, red, white
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Printer
  • Pencil
  • Damp face cloth

How to make it:

  • Print poem (below) onto white paper. We used the Comic Sans font.
  • Cut poem out, curving edges around the poem making it look like a cloud.
  • On a separate blank sheet of white paper, use pencil to lightly draw a heart and the word “MOM” above it.
  • Cut the heart and MOM out, leaving about an inch border.
  • Glue the heart drawing and the poem onto the purple card stock.
  • Cut around the poem and the heart drawing, leaving a small purple card stock border on each.
  • Glue both onto light blue card stock, poem at the bottom.
  • Write your name and the year on the back of the blue card stock.
  • Put small puddles of paint onto a paper plate, one puddle of each color except white. Make a second puddle of pink and add some white to it to make an even lighter pink. You should have 5 puddles of paint (purple, light blue, red, pink, light pink)
  • Dip fingertips into puddles to decorate the heart and write MOM. Do the Ms in purple and the O in light blue. Use red, pink and light pink to decorate the heart. Use damp face cloth to clean off fingertips in between each paint color.
  • Let the paint dry completely.

Fingerprint Poem

My dirty little fingerprints I’ve left on every wall
And on the drawers and tabletops, I’ve really marked them all
But here are some that won’t rub off, I’m giving them to you
Because I’m thankful to have a mom that’s just like you!

Tips:

  • Construction paper can be used instead of card stock but will not be as sturdy. To add more strength, cover with clear Con-tact paper.
  • Use the print preview option on your printer before actually printing. This will allow you to see what the printout will look like without wasting countless sheets of paper.
  • Change the purple and light blue colors we chose to your mom’s favorite colors. Simply match up two colors and use them for the card stock and the two paint colors for the word “MOM”.

Fingerprint Flower Vase!

http://crafts.kaboose.com/swf/300x255_fing-vase1_rdax_65.jpg

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

This lovely little vase is perfect for spring, Mother’s Day, Grandparent’s Day or any occasion that involves the beauty of flowers. This painted jar doubles as a keepsake as it’s made with your fingerprints!

What you’ll need:

  • Empty glass jar
  • Enamel paint (purple, pink, yellow)

How to make it:

  1. First, be sure to read the instructions on the back of the enamel paint bottle.
  2. Be sure glass jar is clean, dry, and all labels have been completely removed.
  3. Dip your fingertips into the paint and dot onto the glass to form the petals of the flowers.
  4. Repeat this process to dot on the flower centers–alternate the colors (purple flower, yellow center, pink flower, purple center, etc).
  5. Let paint dry and cure according to directions on enamel paint bottle. This may require baking in the oven, or a longer alternative is air drying for up to three weeks before using.

Tips:

  • Hold jar by the mouth to avoid bumping or grabbing any wet paint.
  • Acrylic paints can be used; however they will wash off if jar is washed. To protect it better you can spray entire surface with acrylic sealer, however this can diminish the shiny surface of the glass.
