BREAKING A BONE DOESN'T HAVE TO SUCK

Breaking an arm or leg doesn’t have to mean the end of the world. Check out this cast!

Who have broken bones in the past and have had to wear casts know just how uncomfortable they are. They itch, are ugly and make life harder.

And, after a couple of weeks, they are dirty! Yuck. But someone had this great idea, to adorn cast with an X-Ray of the broken bone. For about $40 you too, could have this cool looking cast.

The result is awesome and you will be very original with this cast, that’s for sure. But, this X-Ray design sadly, does not make the cast itch any less.

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

This pretty rainbow is so easy even little ones can make it. It’s perfect for teaching your younger siblings about colors and improving dexterity.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 brick of styrofoam
  • 1 each purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red chenille stems
  • 15 purple pony beads
  • 18 blue pony beads
  • 23 green pony beads
  • 27 yellow pony beads
  • 32 orange pony beads
  • 36 red pony beads
  • Bag of cotton balls

How to make it:

  1. String pony beads onto chenille stems, matching the colors. (i.e. string green pony beads on green chenille, purple pony beads on purple chenille, etc)
  2. Start with the purple beaded stem. Center the beads on the stem and trim the ends of the stem leaving about 2” on each end.
  3. Find the center of the Styrofoam block and insert the two chenille ends into the brick, forming an arch (Picture #1). Hint: use one of the pieces of chenille that you cut off to create the holes first, pull them out then insert the beaded chenille into the hole.
  4. Repeat step 3 for each beaded stem, in the rainbow sequence (next is blue, green, yellow, orange, and red).
  5. Glue cotton balls all around the bottom of the rainbow to form clouds. Cover the Styrofoam brick with cotton balls.
  6. When cotton balls and glue are dry, stretch and gently pull the cotton balls to cover any exposed Styrofoam edges.

Tips:

  • If making several of these (i.e. class or preschool project), cut the bricks in half. This will give you twice the supplies as a full brick is not necessarily needed.
  • Find large bags of pony beads in multicolored value packages at craft supply stores.
  • Show younger siblings the ends of the chenille stems so that they know there are pointy edges.

Though it tastes like traditional fondue, this is more of a comforting casserole: bread is layered with grated Irish cheese and topped with a mixture of eggs, milk and seasonings. The dish is refrigerated overnight and then baked so that it’s creamy inside and crisp golden brown on the outside.  Just before serving, the fondue is cut into wedges.

Ingredients

  • 12 slices firm white bread
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
  • 1/2 pound (2 cups) shredded Kerrygold Blarney Castle cheese or Swiss cheese
  • 2  teaspoons chopped fresh chives
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 eggs
  • 1-1/2 cups half and half
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth

Cooking Instructions

  1. Cut the crusts off the bread slices.
  2. In a small bowl, stir together the butter, mustard and garlic. Spread each slice of bread with some of the butter.
  3. Arrange 6 slices, butter side down, in a 9 by 13-inch baking dish.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine the shredded cheese, chopped chives, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Evenly sprinkle the cheese over the bread in the baking dish. Top with the remaining bread, butter side up.
  5. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs, half and half, milk and chicken broth. Pour over the bread. Cover tightly and refrigerate overnight.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Uncover the fondue and bake it for 1 hour, or until the top is lightly browned and the inside is fairly firm.
  7. Remove the fondue from the oven. Let it rest for 10 minutes. Cut into 8 or 10 wedges.

Substitution(s)

  • You can use vegetable broth instead of the chicken broth, if you like.
  • To make this healthier, substitute skim milk for the regular milk and use whole wheat bread instead of white bread.
  • For picky eaters, omit the chives and serve with tomato sauce.

Make-Ahead

This fondue can be made and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before you bake it.

Tips & Tricks

Try cutting the fondue into 36 strips, and serving each person a couple of strips along with a fresh fruit salad for a light lunch or dinner.

Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 60 minutes
Ready In: 13 hours 30 minutes
Servings: 8-10
Chilling Time: 12 hours

How younger siblings can help

They can help by buttering the bread, arranging it in the baking dish, sprinkling on the cheese, and beating the egg and milk mixture.

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

Celebrate your Irish heritage and St. Patrick’s Day by making this pretty Celtic Cross. Made from recycled materials, it can really be considered “green”!

What you’ll need:

  • Thin cardboard (cereal box, pad of paper, etc)
  • Liquitex Basics Gesso or white acrylic paint
  • Green and yellow acrylic paint
  • Gold glitter glue
  • Square green craft jewel
  • White craft glue
  • Scissors
  • Paint brush
  • Pattern

How to make it:

  1. Cut out pieces from cardboard using pattern.
  2. Place pieces on a piece of newspaper and paint all with one coat of Gesso or white paint. Let dry.
  3. Paint the circle piece yellow and the other pieces green. Let dry. Repeat with another coat if needed.
  4. Paint a layer of gold glitter glue onto the yellow circle. Let dry.
  5. Glue the cross together, three short pieces and the top, long piece as the stem. Glue cross onto circle, centering the circle in the mid-points of the cross.
  6. Glue the craft jewel to the center of the cross.
  7. Squeeze gold glitter glue onto the end of each of the four cross pieces (see photo).
  8. Let dry completely.

Tips:

  • Gesso is a craft medium or surface preparation for acrylic and oil paints and can be found in the art and oil painting section of your local craft store.
  • To eliminate a few steps and make this a quicker project, use green and yellow craft foam or construction paper instead of painting on cardboard.
  • If you don’t have glitter glue, you can use regular gold glitter by sprinkling it onto the yellow circle after painting on a layer of white glue.
