Mother’s Day came first, but Father’s Day wasn’t too far behind. It’s amazing what people accomplish when they put their minds to good use and encourage others to join their cause. It just wouldn’t be the same without many of our holidays and Father’s Day is one of them.

Who came up with the idea of Father’s Day?

Her name was Sonora Louise Smart Dodd and she lived in Spokane, Washington. Sonora was the oldest of six children raised by their father, William Jackson Smart, when their mother died during childbirth. Sonora honored and revered her father, and while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909, she determined there should also be a day to honor fathers.

Sonora gained local support and made her dream a reality one year later within her own city of Spokane, Washington. Sonora married John Bruce Dodd. She died March 22, 1978, several years after Father’s Day became a permanent national observance.

Why June?

In 1910 Sonora chose June 19th as the day to celebrate Father’s Day because that was her father’s birthday. With support from the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane on June 19, 1910.

When did the United States begin celebrating Father’s Day?

1910 Spokane, Washington celebrates Father’s Day.
1924 President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.
1926 The formation of National Father’s Day Committee in New York City.
1956 Father’s Day was recognized by Joint Resolution of Congress.
1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring that the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day.
1972 President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday in June.

Do other countries celebrate Father’s Day?

Father’s Day is celebrated in every part of the world. In the United States, Canada and most countries in Asia, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June.

How can I make this Father’s Day special for my Father?

There are all kinds of things you can do to make Father’s Day special for your dad. Here are a few suggestions:

Make dad breakfast in bed.
Send him flowers, the red rose is the official Father’s Day flower.
Do secret acts of kindness, this might include doing one of dad’s chores for him, like taking out the garbage :)
Be obedient.
Do your chores, without being asked.
Get along with your brothers and sisters.
Make or take him out to dinner.
Send him an on-line greeting card.
Use printables to make a heartfelt Father’s Day card.
Check out in some previous post, great ideas to make dad a homemade gift.

Spice up the Father’s Day festivities with an activity or two.

1. Interview your father and/or grandfather. Ask questions about his birth, childhood, and what he did when he was a teenager. Find out favorite subjects in school, how he met your mother or grandmother. Inquire about his favorite job. End the interview by expressing your love for him.

2. Get together with a few other families and play the Father/Child Game. Divide into four father/child teams. Ask the fathers to leave the room while the children sit in chairs. Ask the same four or five questions to each child about their fathers. Bring in the fathers and ask them the same questions. Will the father and child have the same answers? Switch places and see how well the father’s know the children. Award a red rose to the winning father/child team.

Question Ideas: Favorite color, movie, candy bar, color of toothbrush, memorable moment with you, best friend, hobby, talent, food, animal, cartoon, pizza topping, ice cream topping, restaurant. Most embarrassing moment. Favorite holiday.

3. Have a Father’s Day BBQ or picnic. Make a crown for dad and let him know he’s “King” for the day. This can be a family activity or extend an invitation to a few other families also. Make sure all the dad’s are given “Royal Treatment”.

Miley Cyrus – Happy Father’s Day!

Miley Cyrus shares a super close bond with dad Billy Ray.

The 17-year-old actress sat down with MTV to chat about what she’s doing for this special Father’s Day: “My dad gets to come to my concert for Father’s Day,” she joked.

Miley said in all seriousness, “I just want to tell my dad, ‘Happy Father’s Day,’ and that I love him so much. And he’s the best dad in the world and I would definitely not be pursuing this dream without him ’cause he always taught me to keep going.”

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

Everyone knows what smileys are, so why not make one of you and your dad? This adorable magnet is perfect for attaching to a filing cabinet, refrigerator, or even a tool box.

What you’ll need:

  • ¼ c salt
  • ¼ c water
  • ½ c flour
  • Cookie sheet
  • Acrylic paint: yellow, peach, black, white
  • Paintbrush
  • Toothpick
  • Acrylic sealer spray
  • Magnet
  • White craft glue

How to make it:

  1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F.
  2. Mix together flour, salt, and water. Dough should not be sticky; you should be able to work it in your hands. If it is too sticky add small amounts of flour until you get the consistency that you want. Be careful not to add too much flour as your creations will crack!
  3. Pull a piece of dough off and form a ball by rolling it in your hands. Flatten he ball of dough onto the cookie sheet, it should be about ½” thick.
  4. Repeat the above step; only make the second ball a little smaller. Lay it on the cookie sheet and flatten it to ½”. Place it carefully over the larger circle and use a knife or the toothpick to cut out a piece of the larger circle to fit the smaller circle into. Carefully push them together.
  5. Roll small pieces of dough to form the round noses. Flatten in your hand and then place onto the two faces.
  6. Use a toothpick to draw on the smiles. Be sure to do this step before baking.
  7. Place cookie sheet in oven and bake for 2 ½ hours.
  8. Remove from oven and let cool completely.
  9. Paint faces yellow and noses peach. Let dry. Repeat for a second coat.
  10. Use the handle end of the paintbrush to add whites of eyes. LET DRY completely before adding blacks of eyes or they will run together.
  11. Add blacks of eyes in same fashion as the whites.
  12. Use toothpick dipped in black paint to draw within the smile lines.
  13. Get a grown-up to spray the entire surface with acrylic sealer spray.
  14. Glue a magnet to the back and let dry.

Tips:

  • Personalize your smileys by adding hair, glasses or freckles.
  • Make a family of smileys or just add more kids.
  • Salt dough is basically one part salt, one part water and two parts flour. We recommended a small batch above. You can make as much or as little as you like. Keep in mind that you cannot save it, it will dry out, so only make what you need or intend to use.

Rock Family Plaque!

http://crafts.kaboose.com/swf/rock_family_final_350x255_rdax_65.jpg

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

This adorable craft is so easy and looks marvelous sitting on a shelf or on Dad’s desk. A great gift for Father’s Day!

What you’ll need:

  • Wood plaque
  • Rocks, one for each family member
  • Wiggle eyes, 2 for each rock
  • Black acrylic paint
  • Acrylic sealer spray
  • Paintbrush
  • White craft glue
  • Label maker or silver paint and a black marker

How to make it:

  1. Paint the wood plaque with a coat of black paint and let dry. (Picture #1)
  2. Wash the rocks and let them dry.
  3. Paint a second coat of black paint on the plaque and let dry.
  4. Have an adult spray the plaque with a coat of acrylic sealer spray. Let dry. (Picture #2)
  5. Position rocks on the table and find the “resting spot” on the rock so that they will sit solidly on your plaque.
  6. Glue wiggle eyes on to the rocks, using a generous amount of glue. The glue will dry clear. Let dry. (Picture #3)
  7. Position rocks on the plaque, then add a generous amount of white glue to the bottom of each rock and gently press onto the plaque. Let dry completely. (Picture #4)
  8. Use a label maker to create your family name. If you don’t have a label maker, paint a strip on the plaque with silver paint. Let dry completely.
  9. When strip is dry, use a black marker to write your family name.

Tips:

  • If you prefer a more colorful plaque, paint each of the rocks with colorful paint before adding the eyes.
  • Be sure to let this project dry completely before giving it to Dad. Allow about 4 hour’s worth of drying time.
  • If you really want to play around with this, use yarn and construction paper to add hair and hats to the rock faces!
