You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

Decorate your table this Fourth of July with these adorable treat holders made to look like Uncle Sam’s hat. Fill with your favorite treats and give away as party favors at the end of the party!

What you’ll need:

  • Styrofoam cup
  • Red and blue felt
  • Red paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Silver chenille stem
  • Scissors
  • White craft glue
  • Black marker

How to make it:

  1. Place cup, open end down, on top of the red felt and trace with a marker.
  2. Cut around the traced circle leaving a ¾” border around it.
  3. Fold the circle and cut a slit in the center of the circle to allow your scissors to get in. Cut out the inside circle, leaving about a ¼” border around the inside of the trace line. Set felt circle aside.
  4. Paint red stripes all the way around the outside of the cup, stripes should run up and down. Let dry completely.
  5. Cut a strip of blue felt about 1.5” wide. It should be long enough to wrap around the brim of the cup.
  6. Glue felt strip around the outside of the top of the cup.
  7. Lay red felt circle on to work surface, black trace line should be facing up.
  8. Line the lip of the cup with white glue and press down onto black trace line. Let dry.
  9. Turn cup over and place on work surface.
  10. Use silver chenille to bend into star shapes, trim where needed. Glue onto the blue hat band.
  11. When everything is dry, fill with treats.

Tips:

  • To make our treat cups sturdier, especially if using outside, glue a heavy washer to the bottom of the cup.
  • You can add handles to your cup by twisting to chenille stems together and poking through the sides of the cup and running over the top. This step should be done before adding the blue brim.
  • You may also use white paper or plastic cups for this project.

Dad’s Sports Crazy Hat!

http://crafts.kaboose.com/swf/craft_crazyhat1_rdax_65.jpg

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

Is your dad crazy for cars? Or maybe it’s golf, or sports, or even fishing. Whatever it is that your pop adores, make him this fun hat for Father’s Day that he’ll wear all year long!

What you’ll need:

  • White baseball hat
  • Red fabric pen
  • Black permanent marker
  • Red and black fabric paint
  • Foam stamp (optional)

How to make it:

  1. Draw out your design on a piece of paper first.
  2. If using a foam stamp, decide where you are going to place the design before painting the stamp. Once you’ve applied it there’s no turning back!
  3. Paint the foam stamp with fabric paint and press design on to the hat. If not using a stamp, paint your design directly onto the hat.
  4. Use a fabric pen or marker to write “car crazy” (or “golf crazy”, “sports crazy”, etc) onto the hat.
  5. Use a black permanent marker to trace around the letters.
  6. If you like you can use a fine paintbrush to fill in the letters to make them stand out more.
  7. Let dry completely, overnight is best.

Tips:

  • If you want to use acrylic paints on the cap instead of fabric paint, simply purchase a bottle of textile medium. When textile medium is mixed with an acrylic paint, the acrylic paint becomes usable on fabrics. You can find it in the art section of craft supply stores.
  • Improvise with what you have. We actually used a school bus foam stamp to make our cards, we just painted the section we needed instead of the whole bus and filled in the roof with a paintbrush.
  • It’s important to draw your design out on paper first. You can even lightly sketch it directly on your hat with a pencil before painting.

Faux Leather Pen Holder!

http://crafts.kaboose.com/swf/350x255_dadcan_large_rdax_65.jpg

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

Make your dad this great-looking pen holder for his desk or tool bench. Its handsome exterior resembles aged leather. He will cherish the gift for years to come!

What you’ll need:

  • Empty can
  • Masking tape
  • Brown shoe polish
  • Old rag
  • ½ sheet of brown felt
  • Scissors
  • Brown or Earth tone beads
  • Hot glue gun
  • Acrylic sealer spray

How to make it:

  1. Be sure can is washed inside and out and completely dry. Trace a circle from the can onto the brown felt and set the felt aside.
  2. Tear off pieces of masking tape and cover the can completely with it, including the bottom and overlapping the rim.
  3. Apply brown shoe polish all over the masking tape. The more you use the darker it will get. Wipe off excess with an old rag. Set aside to dry completely.
  4. Cut around the circle shape on the felt (see Step 1) NOT on the lines, but about ½” around the outside and inside of the line you traced. This will make a ring.
  5. Using the line you traced as your guide, pipe a line of hot glue onto the felt. Quickly place the rim of the can onto the glue, adhering the felt ring to the top of the can.
  6. With an adult’s help, hot glue the sides of the felt down to the inside and outside of the can rim.
  7. Glue beads around the bottom edge of the brown felt on the outside of the can.
  8. Pull off any leftover hot glue strings to clean up your project.
  9. Spray can with acrylic sealer spray.

Tips:

  • Use good quality shoe polish, not the dollar store kind. Dollar store shoe polish is very watery and does not stain well.
  • For younger siblings, you can skip the steps for the felt rim and use a line of masking tape instead. Have them string the beads onto a sturdy piece of yarn or cord and hot glue that around the rim for them.
  • Be sure to write “Father’s Day” and the year you made it on the bottom of the can!

Denise Jonas – Only The Mom Can Be The Mom!

Denise Jonas puts on a happy smile as she surrounds herself with her three eldest sons, Kevin, Joe and Nick on the May 2010 cover of Guideposts magazine.

Check out some of Denise’s tips for moms everywhere:

On listening to the music: “Nick was the most precocious musically. At age three, he wandered around the house, asking, ‘Do you hear that? Do you hear the music?’ Then he’d burst out with some song.”

On staying connected with her four boys: “Don’t stop sending messages. Kids need to know you love them. I even buy cards for the boys when they’re on the road. Two weeks ago I came home to a bouquet of flowers and a card from Joe. All he wanted to say was: ‘I love you, Mom.’ It made my day. In our house you can never say ‘I love you’ too much.”

On her favorite song: “One of my favorites of the boys’ songs is called ‘Pushing Me Away.’ Every time they do it in concert, I get choked up because it speaks to one of my weaknesses as a mom. I’m passionate and strong-willed—my Italian blood again. I want to be front and center in my kids’ lives. I have opinions about everything.”

On being the mom: “You’re not the best friend. You’re the mom. Set limits and an example. Anyone can be a friend. Only the mom can be the mom. Sometimes that’s difficult.”

Pick up the May issue now!

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

Make yourself fashionable on St. Patrick’s Day with a Leprechaun hat. Kids can craft an old ice-cream container into something magical!

What you’ll need:

  • 1/2 gallon round ice cream container, clean and dry (you do not need the lid)
  • 4 pieces of Green felt
  • 1 piece of Gray felt
  • 1 piece of Black felt
  • 1 yard of Green ribbon about 1/2″ wide
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Black permanent marker
  • Tacky glue or Hot glue gun
  • Hole punch
  • Large circular object (however wide the felt is)

How to make it:

  1. Trace around the bottom of the ice cream container on the green felt with the black marker.
  2. Cut out the circle.
  3. Glue the circle to the bottom of the ice cream container.
  4. Cut a piece of green felt to go around the container. You may need two pieces of felt.
  5. Glue the felt around the container.
  6. Punch a hole right below the lip of the container. Repeat on the opposite side. (You may need to use the scissors if the hole punch has troubles.)
  7. Trace around a large circular object that is as big around as a piece of felt is wide.
  8. Cut out the circle. This will be the floppy part (brim) of the hat.
  9. Sit the ice cream container, open side down, on the middle of the felt circle. Trace around the container.
  10. Cut a circle out of the middle of the felt large circle about 2″ inside the lines. Discard this inner circle.
  11. Make snips in the felt from the cutout area to the drawn lines to create “tabs”. This will allow you to push the “tabs” up inside the hat and glue in place.
  12. Turn the ice cream container/hat on the flat end. Lay the circle with the snips on top of the open end of the container. Run a bead of glue around the inside of the container near the rim.
  13. Push the tabs up into the container and against the glue. (Note: This is where the hot glue comes in handy as it sets up quickly. If using hot glue, only run about a 3″ length of glue at a time.)
  14. Once the glue has set up, punch a hole in the felt on the brim of the hat next to the hole on the ice cream container. Repeat for other side.
  15. Cut a strip about 2″ wide out of the black felt.
  16. Cut a 4″ square out of the gray felt.
  17. Cut a rectangle in the middle of the gray felt about 1 1/4″ x 2″. Discard the little piece of felt.
  18. Check positioning of the black band by laying it around the hat about an inch above the brim. Cut off any excess felt where it meets in the back.
  19. Lay the gray (buckle) over the black band as shown in the photograph. Once the layout is satisfactory, glue in place.
  20. Cut the piece of ribbon in half.
  21. Thread one piece of ribbon from the inside of the hat to the outside. Tie a double or triple knot on the inside of the hat with one end of the ribbon. Take the piece of ribbon on the outside and push down through the hole in the brim.
  22. Repeat with the other piece of ribbon.
  23. Place the hat on your head and tie the ribbon in a bow under your chin.
  24. Have fun with your new Leprechaun hat!

Tips:

  • This could possibly be made with construction paper for a lower cost project.
