Debby Ryan is just one of many celebs who are taking the initiative to keep art in school systems.

Together with DoSomething.org, HP and AMD, have teamed up for a new initiative called “Make Art. Save Art.,” which encourages teens to showcase their artistic talents and passion.

Artists can create PC wallpaper designs and submit them to MakeArtSaveArt.org along with a testimonial about why art education matters to them.

The top five most shared designs will win an HP dv6z Pavilion notebook with VISION technology from AMD. The Grand Prize winner will be selected from the most shared designs by a panel of expert and celebrity judges to receive a $5000 grant for his or her school art program and 5 HP dV6z Pavilion notebooks for the art room.

Debby shared about the program, “It carries over into real life, you know, if you look at a piece of clay and you just see a ball of clay then that’s all you’re going to see in the world. But if you see kind of a situation and you realize that you can do something with it, and mold it and shape it, I think it all starts in the art room.”

The eight-week campaign will run through Sept. 30. Artists can submit designs at any time during the campaign. “Sharing” will launch Sept. 1.

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

This fun project is perfect for people of almost any age. These inexpensive yet lovely soap bars make perfect gifts for teachers, mom, grandma, or just about anyone. Plus, they’re fun to use in the bath, too!

What you’ll need:

  • Glycerin soap, clear or white (This only works with glycerin soap – do not substitute.)
  • Soap dye in colors or your choice
  • Soap or candy molds
  • Microwave safe liquid measuring cup
  • Spoon
  • Popsicle stick or coffee stirrer
  • Knife (adults only)

How to make it:

  1. If using bars of soap, cut into three pieces. If using purchased glycerin blocks, cut off 2-3 pre-measured chunks.
  2. Put glycerin soap into a measuring cup, microwave according to package directions (or 20 seconds), then in 10-second intervals until melted.
  3. If you want colors, this is the time to add the dye. Add a few drops and stir with a spoon. If you want the color darker, simply add more dye.
  4. Slowly pour the liquid soap into the mold. Set aside to harden for 45 minutes to an hour. Some soaps may harden sooner than others.
  5. Rinse out measuring cup and repeat process for other colors.
  6. After soap has cooled completely, pop them out of the molds. If you find this difficult, you can place the soap into the freezer for ten minutes and try again.

Tips:

  • For a tie dye effect, don’t add dye until after you have poured white soap into the molds. Add random drops of dye into white soap in mold and swirl with a coffee stick or toothpick.
  • For multicolor layers, pour the first color in and allow it to cool enough to form a skin (about 5 minutes). Carefully and very slowly add the second color over that.
  • For pastel shades, add only a couple drops of dye. For more bold colors, add more drops.
  • Make your own colors by mixing the dyes, or create a tie dye effect by using two or more colors instead of just one.

Making Christmas Wreaths!

Christmas wreaths are one of the most typical decorations for the season.

There are many kinds of wreaths, apart from the traditional green leaves with red holly. We can make wreaths out of many different materials, the important thing is that it is circular and that you can nail it to your door.

If you are drawing a blank, check out the wreaths below made from cork, ties, felt, buttons and Christmas papers. You could also make a wreath out of old CD’s.

How do you put together a wreath? The key ingredients are lots of materials to decorate with, and a sturdy base. Let’s look at the button wreath, for example, Buy some wire from the hardware shop and make two circles, one larger than the other and attach them together. Then take cardboard and mount it on the wire. After this is dry, you can begin to add the buttons.

If this wreath seems too hard then you could try this other wreath made out of yarn balls. It is much easier, you just need a few balls in different colors and sizes and then simply attach them to the wire base – like beads on a necklace.
