If you have been thinking about getting a parakeet for a pet, there are a few things that you must keep in mind in order to care for it correctly.
Behavior: They are socialble animals and so it is best to get two parakeets, not just one, so that they don’t feel lonely. If they don’t have a nest they will not reproduce. Two females do not get along, but two males will.
Food: Parakeets eat seeds which you can buy at specialty pet shops, but they also like fruits and vegetables. You could try lettuce, apple, pear, strawberry, peaches, and melon. Be careful because some more exotic fruits could be poisonous for them.
Male or Female?: If you want a bird that will sing and chirp a lot then you will want a male. How to tell? Look at the skin on the top portion of their beaks, if it is blue it is a male and if it is brown it is a female.
Cage: You need a cage that is spacious so that the birds can move around and be comfortable. Make sure the cage is in a place that is not too cold or too warm. Also, you could try to get your pet used to flying around out of the cage. If you do this, then make sure to close all the windows first to make sure nothing happens.
Toys: Make sure to have a few toys for your pet. Parakeets love to play just like we do. Buy a perch and a ball. However, do not include a mirror in the cage, as this causes the parakeet to feel stress and depression.
