I Love You Daddy Poem!

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

Pair this cute poem with some construction paper and a photo and you’ve created a fun family keepsake that Dad will cherish.

What you’ll need:

How to make it:

1. Print off poem and trim off excess paper, cut the corners off if you like. (Picture #1)
2. Cut around the edges of the light blue construction paper in whatever design you like. We chose curves. (Picture #2)
3. Glue the light blue paper to the blue paper.
4. Glue the poem to the light blue paper, leaving enough room above it to place your photograph. (Picture #3)
5. Glue the photograph above the poem.

Tips:

• You can make this craft extra special by writing out their own poems.
• You can add a hanger by taping a piece of yarn or ribbon to the back.
• To help this keepsake really last, you can laminate it!
• Be sure to write the date on the back.

Cookie Tube For Dad!

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

Recycle a cylindrical potato chip container into a modern art cookie tin for Dad! Paint it however you like and fill it will your dad’s favorite homemade cookies.

What you’ll need:

How to make it:

1. Bake your dad’s favorite cookie recipe and set aside to cool.
2. Wash out the potato chip container carefully and let dry.
3. Paint the container with a coat of gesso or white paint and let dry. (Picture #1)
4. Paint container with different colors in an abstract art fashion. (Picture #2) We did fat brush strokes in random places using three different colors.
5. While the paint is still drying, use a paintbrush to add the lightest color, filling in the gaps and overlapping the other colors. (Picture #3)
6. Have an adult spray with acrylic sealer spray and let dry.
7. Wrap stacked cookies in tissue paper and fill container.
8. Replace lid and add a bow to the top if you like.

Tips:

• If Dad doesn’t have a favorite cookie, try some of our cookie recipes (Type in the SEARCH: Cookie).
• If your dad’s favorite are brownies, make the brownies and use a round cookie cutter or biscuit cutter to make them round (after they are baked)!
• Add a leftover Christmas bow to the top or make one from ribbon.

Almost No Sew Hip Makeup Bag!

This hip and funky makeup bag makes a perfect homemade gift or any cool mom. A pretty fabric matched with a bright button makes for a lovely present that mother can truly use. A great gift for Mother’s Day.

What you’ll need:

How to make it:

1. Cut fabric into two pieces, 9” x 8” and 5” x 8”.
2. Lay 9” piece of fabric right side up on table. Lay 5” piece of fabric right side down on top of larger piece of fabric. Line up bottom to bottom (8” side) on one end and glue the edges together (right sides together) with a thin strip of glue.
3. Now that the 8″ ends are glued together, flip the fabric over so the wrong sides are facing up. For the non-glued 8″ ends, fold the edge of the fabric over so that 1/2inches or less of the right side of the fabric is folded over the wrong side of the fabric. Glue on the inside of the fold to create finished edges.
4. With wrong sides still facing up, glue a seam along both long sides. All edges should now have seams.
5. With fabric laying wrong side up, take smaller end (5” x 8”) and fold it up and glue the wrong sides of the smaller and larger pieces together to complete the formation of the bag.
6. Fold long top flap (9” x 8”) down until it meets the top of the bag, glue the complete inside the flap so wrong sides are stuck together.
7. Use scissors to cut a button hole in the center of the flap.
8. Fold flap over the bag and use a pen or pencil to make a dot through the hole and onto the bag fabric for placement of the button.
9. Sew button securely onto front of bag.
10. Sew edges of button hole to keep them from fraying.
11. Close bag and secure button through hole.

Tips:

• Be sure to choose a sturdy fabric. It should feel fairly stiff and hold its shape.
• Instead of a button you may choose a fastener, available at discount department or fabric stores. If you are not comfortable using a needle and thread, you can glue the button on the outside for decoration, but use a piece of Velcro on the inside for the closure.
• Some permanent fabric glues are messy and take a long time to dry. Ask your local fabric store about the different types available.

Make this useful gift from a recycled envelope box. Your mom can store all of her favorite recipe cards neatly in this pretty container. If she’s a real recipe hound, make this project from a tissue box or even a shoe box!

What you’ll need:

How to make it:

1. Trim top flaps off of cardboard box.
2. Cover box, inside and out, with purple felt. Use the glue stick for most of the application, secure seams and ends with white craft glue.
3. From the dark purple felt, cut 4 long strips about 1” wide.
4. Trim sides of each dark purple strip to add curves, or you can cut with decorative scissors to give them a scalloped look.
5. Glue strips onto each corner to cover any seams.
6. Cut out a pretty picture from an old greeting card or choose a piece of clip art and print it on card stock. Glue the picture to the front of the box.
7. Cut out small hearts from the greeting card and glue them onto the front of the box for further decoration.

Tips:

• To minimize visible seems, start gluing your felt from the inside bottom of the box and work your way out toward the back of the box. Repeat this process for the front as well.
• You can find plenty of free clip art on Kaboose and on the internet by doing a search on “food clip art” or “recipe clip art”. Choose whatever phrase fits your needs. Check the sites rules on using clip art, though most allow you to use it for personal purposes.

Family Marble Magnets!

You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.

Give a set of these adorable little magnets and your parents will need no reminder of how much you love them! These make a perfect gift for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.

What you’ll need:

How to make it:

1. Choose photos that have family members smiling and their faces will fit inside the marble. Place the marble onto the photo to gauge size. This is great for using snapshots that don’t have very good framing or are otherwise not frame worthy. (Picture #1)
2. Once you have decided on a photo, place marble over face and trace around with a pen. (Picture #2)
3. Cut the face out inside the trace line.
4. Use your finger to smear a thin layer of white glue onto the flat back of the marble.
5. Press the marble gently down onto the cut out photo face. Allow to dry. 6. Glue a magnet to the back and let dry. (Picture #3)

Tips:

• If you prefer not to cut up photos, you can draw faces on white paper using crayons. Markers may run with the glue, so crayons are best.
• Make a great gift set by creating magnets using the faces of everyone in your family–Mom, Dad, brother, sister, and even your pet!
• These are perfect for hanging on an office file cabinet, at home on the fridge or on Dad’s toolbox.

This recycled flower pot craft is a fun Earth Day project that keeps plastic milk jugs out of the landfill and provides a pretty and useful pot to plant flowers in. Makes a wonderful Mother’s Day gift, too!

What you’ll need:

How to make it:

1. Cut the top off of the plastic jug, just under the handle. (Picture #1)
2. Turn bottom of jug upside down and have an adult poke 4 small drain holes in the bottom. (Picture #2)
3. Cut fabric or tear paper into 1” squares.  (Picture #3)
4. Mix 2 parts glue and 1 part water in a bowl.
5. Paint glue mixture onto one side of the outside of the milk jug. (Picture #4)
6. Decoupage the fabric or paper all over the sides of the jug, applying glue onto the jug first, then over the fabric or paper to adhere. (Picture #5)
7. Cut 1.5” wide strips from felt, enough to go around the opening of the pot. (Picture #6)
8. Glue the strip onto the lip of the pot, overlapping both sides, inside and out. (Picture #7)
9. Add a handful of gravel or small rocks to the bottom of the pot.
10. Add a small amount of soil then add the potted flower.
11. Fill pot with soil, carefully but firmly patting down the soil around the flower.
12. Water your flower and place near a sunny window.

Tips:

• This pot makes a lovely accent to a patio table; however the decoupage will be ruined should it rain. To avoid this, before adding gravel, soil and flower, place the pot inside a clear plastic bag. Insert the overlap of the bag inside the pot, roll up the side if needed, you don’t want the plastic blocking the drain holes.
• Place your pot on a plate before watering to catch any water that may drain out the holes.
• These make great pots for herbs as well!

Earth Day’s History:

Earth Day is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment.

Below is a brief account of Earth Day history. You can read this story out in front of the class or for family on the holiday.

In the Beginning…
In 1963, former Senator Gaylord Nelson began to worry about our planet. (A senator is a person that the people of the United States have chosen to help make the laws.) Senator Nelson knew that our world was getting dirty and that many of our plants and animals were dying.

He wondered why more people weren’t trying to solve these problems. He talked to other lawmakers and to the President. They decided that the President would go around the country and tell people about these concerns. He did, but still not enough people were working on the problem.

The Idea
Then, in 1969, Senator Nelson had another idea. He decided to have a special day to teach everyone about the things that needed changing in our environment. He wrote letters to all of the colleges and put a special article in Scholastic Magazine to tell them about the special day he had planned. (Most of the schools got this magazine and he knew that kids would help him.)

The Holiday
On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was held. People all over the country made promises to help the environment. Everyone got involved and since then, Earth Day has spread all over the planet. People all over the world know that there are problems we need to work on and this is our special day to look at the planet and see what needs changing. Isn’t it great?

One person had an idea and kept working until everyone began working together to solve it. See what happens when people care about our world?

Earth Day’s Facts:

• Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to watch a TV for three hours – it’s equivalent to half a gallon of gasoline.
• Earth Day is a relatively new holiday and was first celebrated on April 22 in 1970. More than 20 million Americans participated in this first Earth Day celebration
• Earth Day was founded by a senator of Wisconsin and the day is credited for creating the environmentalism movement.
• April 22 is the first official day of Spring in the Northern hemisphere and of Fall in the Southern hemisphere and was chosen to be Earth Day for this reason.



• Never underestimate the importance of recycling: if every newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year. Unfortunately only 27% of all American newspapers are recycled.
• More than 20,000,000 Hershey’s Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of tinfoil. All that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it.
• Only 11% of the earth’s surface is used to grow food.
• The world’s first national park was started in 1872 at Yellowstone National Park in the US.



• The first major international conference on environmental issues was held in Sweden in 1972 and was sponsored by the United Nations.
• The first wildlife refuge was formed on Pelican Island Florida in 1903.
• The patron Saint of ecologists is St. Francis and the first proclamation of Earth Day was made by the mayor of San Francisco in 1970.
• A highlight of the annual Earth Day ceremony at the United Nations is the ringing of the Peace Bell that was given to the UN by Japan. It is made from coins given by school children to further peace on our planet.
