You might need to use tools that require adult supervision, such as glue gun and scissors. If so, these can be replaced by textile glue and safety scissors. Make sure you ask your parents some help.
Decorate your table this Fourth of July with these adorable treat holders made to look like Uncle Sam’s hat. Fill with your favorite treats and give away as party favors at the end of the party!
What you’ll need:
- Styrofoam cup
- Red and blue felt
- Red paint
- Paintbrush
- Silver chenille stem
- Scissors
- White craft glue
- Black marker
How to make it:
- Place cup, open end down, on top of the red felt and trace with a marker.
- Cut around the traced circle leaving a ¾” border around it.
- Fold the circle and cut a slit in the center of the circle to allow your scissors to get in. Cut out the inside circle, leaving about a ¼” border around the inside of the trace line. Set felt circle aside.
- Paint red stripes all the way around the outside of the cup, stripes should run up and down. Let dry completely.
- Cut a strip of blue felt about 1.5” wide. It should be long enough to wrap around the brim of the cup.
- Glue felt strip around the outside of the top of the cup.
- Lay red felt circle on to work surface, black trace line should be facing up.
- Line the lip of the cup with white glue and press down onto black trace line. Let dry.
- Turn cup over and place on work surface.
- Use silver chenille to bend into star shapes, trim where needed. Glue onto the blue hat band.
- When everything is dry, fill with treats.
Tips:
- To make our treat cups sturdier, especially if using outside, glue a heavy washer to the bottom of the cup.
- You can add handles to your cup by twisting to chenille stems together and poking through the sides of the cup and running over the top. This step should be done before adding the blue brim.
- You may also use white paper or plastic cups for this project.

You can create a patriotic pal for the Fourth of July! This fun project is great for your younger siblings who will love putting on the oh-so-soft beard made of cotton balls.
What you’ll need:
- Paper plate
- Construction paper: red, white, blue
- 50-60 cotton balls
- Flesh-toned and pink crayons
- 2 medium wiggle eyes
- 1 medium pink pom-pom
- Black marker
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- White craft glue
- Pattern 1
- Pattern 2
How to make it:
- Cut out all hat pieces using patterns 1 and 2. When tracing the hat stripes, it’s okay to make them a little longer than the pattern because you will trim the excess after they are glued on. (Picture #1)
- Color the center circle of the paper plate with a flesh-toned crayon. (Picture #2)
- To assemble the hat, use a glue stick. First, glue the red stripes to the white portion of the hat. (Picture #3) Following the pattern, glue on the blue hat band. Add the red hat brim, then glue on the white stars to the band. Finally, trim any excess to make the hat even.
- Using white glue, press cotton balls all around the outside edges of the plate, two layers at the top (hair) and several more for the beard. All that should be visible is peach colored face. (Picture #4)
- Glue on wiggle eyes and the pom-pom nose. Use a pink crayon to color on cheeks. (Picture #5)
- Cut the bowtie from red paper, the center tie circle from blue, and a star from white. Assemble the tie using a glue stick.
- Use white glue to add the hat and the bowtie.
- Add eyebrows and a mouth with black marker.
Tips:
- Cotton balls stick very easily to white glue making them a perfect medium for younger siblings.
- Check the school supply aisle for glue sticks instead of the craft aisle.
- If you don’t have wiggle eyes, use construction paper, craft foam, or just draw the eyes on with a marker.
